Explorer.exe has Generated errors and will be closed by windows.

This message is only recieved after I log in with only 1 particular username. The rest of the usernames work just fine. The message appears over and over right after login.

Please help!!

Does this continue until your toolbar is full of explorer errors? If so I would suggest creating a new user, then copy what you need (documents, favorites, etc.) from the old user folder into the new user folder. This is found under c:\documents and settings\old user. Make sure you can see hidden files and folders.

Might be a start!

I would definitely agree with Mr. Barker. Get the essentials from the user's profile (documents, etc.) and create a new user on the machine.

Generally that happens when one or more files contained in that user's profile folder are corrupt. Before copying, deleting and remaking, try removing the ntuser.ini and ntuser.dat from that profile first.
I had one where the desktop folder was corrupt and would bluescreen when that user logged in. I just copied the files out, and made a new desktop folder while logged in as someone else. It might take you a while to figure out exactly which file is corrupt though.

Please will you help me? I have a very similar problem.
I have Windows 2000 Pro on my own, single user, stand alone machine - reasons to long to go into - I know that W2KP is a multiuser, multi-terminal system, but there you are. I am not an IT professional.

Recently, W2K told me that my user profile had been corrupted and that I would be logged on as a temporary user. Since then, I have been a tenant on my own machine, with poor access to programs and the Net, and worse, NO access to my old address book. I am struggling back to functionality, but can find little that a non-IT manager can follow, especially on the Microsoft webpages. The only move I have found to help is to set the old user profile to be "shared".
I am willing to delete the old user profile, annd start again, but where can I find the old address book, and copy it so that it can be read anew?

My thanks in advance for any help that you can suggest.

Hello,

I just formatted my harddrive and re-installed windows 2000 pro. The installation appears to have gone ok. When I open windows and go to programs on the windows start button I get the error message:

"Explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created."

Nothing else has been installed on the system. It is a fresh installation of Windows 2k pro with service pack 1.

I have installed windows 2k pro on this machine about 1 year ago and did not have any problems.

Any ideas?

Thanks!
-Steven
