I'm running exchange 5.5 sp4 on NT4 sp6a. The server seem to be doing ok but when I try to do a backup I receive the following error.

Event ID: 200
Source: ESE97
Type: error
Catagory: Database Page Cache

Aread of the database file E:\EXCHSRVR\MDBDATA\PRIV.EDB between offsets 0x000000000BFC0000 and 0x000000000BFC7FFF failed after 16 failed read attempts with error -1018. There is a software or hardware problem affecting the database drive that must be corrected to preserve database integrety. Contact Microsoft Product Support Services. etc.

How do I go about solving this problem?

It appears your priv.edb has a small amount of corruption. First thing I would do is find out how old your last good backup is. Your error specifically talks about the integrity of your priv.edb. So I would run an integrity check on it (eseutil /g /is) from cmd prompt at E:\EXCHSRVR\MDBDATA. That will let you know if the integrity is good. If that errors then you can look into doing soft recoveries using eseutil's. These util's are dangerous so be careful with which one you use.

If anyone calls and says "I know a little something about computers" just tell them to reformat it.

Don't just treat the symptoms, though. Unless you find the cause of the 1018s, the db corruption will just come right back again.

One common cause used to be disk controllers without a battery-enabled cache, or with some hardware issues. Ge tthat server checked out thoroughly.

Thank you all for the info. I will see what I can do with these suggestions to solve my problem.
