I am running a restaurant database for an annual restaurant guide with two tables. One table has the facts & figures (ie tel no, address, prices etc), the other has the 2004 reviews, which have been imported from word/exel. The tables are linked in a one-to-one relationship by ID numbers. Whenever I try to run a query using info from both tables, I get a message 'unable to open query in datasheet view, possibly because another user has a source table open in exclusive mode'. I have shut everyone out of the database except me and re-started my machine but I get this message every time. I have checked that the database is in 'shared' mode. Can't find a way round it.

A few quick questions to establish more facts ......

Have you ever had this database running succesfully ?

How have you imported the data from Word / Excel ?

Is the database file stored locally or on a network ?

And a quick check ......

Just to establish that you have exclusive control of the database and nobody is locking a record

Go to Tools / Database Utilities / Compact And Repair Database.

To perform this function you will need exclusive access and so if it compacts succesfully you have established that you have exclusive control of the database. If it doesn't then you will get a message informing you that you do not have exclusive access.

the database has been running successfully and I have no problem running a query from the facts & figures table.
It's only when I import another file from excel into the database that I get the problem. I link that to the facts & figures table with a one-to-one relationship and when I try to run a query I get the exclusive mode error every time.

I have shut everyone else out of the database, re-booted my machine and I still get the problem (it's on a NT server network). Also, I have saved the database onto my hard disk and I still get the problem.

I have run compact and repair and still get the problem.

As a last resort, I have tried exporting the facts & figures table as a csv file and re-importing it into the database - linked it up to the excel import and hey presto, it worked OK. So somehow the facts & figures table thinks it's in exclusive mode when it's not and I can't see how to correct it.
