I'm new to Microsoft Exchange Server (MES), and have discovered that I can't backup its files to tape using ArcServe, as they are permanently in use. MES Help suggests using NT Backup, but that wants to write to tape. I'd like to backup to another disk location, and backup from there to tape as part of my automated overnight b/u job.

I do this with SQL Server files using the SQL Server Agent. Is there a similar facility in MES, or can I fool NT B/u into writing to disk?

We never used to have a tape device on our exchange server. What I used to do was use a scheduling program to run a batch file once a night. The batch file stopped the exchange services, mapped a drive to another server, copied the data files and then started the services again. This worked fine. I do now use though, Veritas Backup Exec with and Exchange add-on. This backs up Excahnge while the services are still running.

Hope this helps

You can do that with ArcServe as well with the services running and doing a complete backup. However for that you will have to install an ArcServe Exchange agent on your exchange server and thats it i have been doing this for more than 2 years and works fine and you can even do brick level backup using that but it consumes heck lot of space.

Using the Exchange Server options for both Veritas and ARCserver, provides one big advantage. It commits and removes the log files. This is a big space saving design. NT backup also does the same thing. This is called performing an online backup. When you stop services and backup, which you can do, you are not committing the log files and they continue to grow.

It is preferable to perform the online backups. You should also disable circular logging so as to not over right log files in case you must do offline backups.

Best bet, buy the updated Veritas 8.6, it has diskless option for backups.

Thanks to all respondents - confirms what I suspected would be the case, next step is to see if the budget runs to the Exchange Agent
