Hello,

I'm sorry if something similar to this thread has already been posted.

I look after a small network with about 7 users in total. The exchange server 2000 is on one machine and the internet Proxy server (Pro602 LanSuite) is installed on another PC. The current situation is that we can send emails internally within the domain.

Our problem is we cannot send or receive emails from external.

Could anyone please point me in the right direction.

Many Thanks

Zal

Does either Server show any errors?
Check in Services on the Exchange box to see if "Microsoft Internet Mail Service" is running. If not, start it.
Check in Services on the Proxy box to see if "Microsoft Winsock Proxy" is running. If not, start it.
Hope this helps.

madhente,

Thanks for your reply.

I cant see neither Microsoft Internet Mail or Winsock Proxy services in the list.

What I am attempting to do now, is using the Exchange Server also as the dialup machine, and ignoring the proxy for the meantime, see if I make some progress.

Could you give me simple guidelines how i would attempt the above.

Thank You

Zal

"Microsoft Internet Mail Service"

That is Exchange 5.5

Once you get the server online just make sure it can resolve domains via dns and that you can connect to a domain on port 25. Thats it. Dan

Dan,

Thanks for your intervention.

I am try to telnet via port 25, and being promped with "could not open a connection to host", does this mean anything to you.

Are there any other command line checks I can do?

BTW.. what is the best way to check the domains are being resolved by DNS, as I have no clue.

Any tips or assistance will be appreciated.

Thanks Again.

Dan,

I just checked the STMP Queue and there are no message awaiting delivery, does this mean there is a configuration issue with Outlook?

Here is the error message that will give you more information on what could be the cause.

The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'myemail@hotmail.com'. Subject '', Account: 'EX_SERVER ', Server: 'EX_SERVER', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for myemail@hotmail.com', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

Any information on this will be great.

Thanks

Zal

This means your not getting any mail. Was this from the server? If so see if SMTP service is started. If it was externally then your blocking the port.

nslookup can resolve external addresses. you can also try to ping domains and see if it comes back with a valid ip for the domain
