I am setting up a live production exchange server for the first time and I cant seem to send email out the mail server sends mail internally but will not accept incomming mail and will not allow internal mail to be sent externally. I beleave this to be a problem with DNS. I have opened up the SMTP ports on my router and the ISP that I have here in NY has opened up there ports as well. About DNS, I am using Dynamic DNS, and when I query the MX record through DNSstuff.com it comes back with the right IP address. Im out of ideas, Please help.
Thanks,
MEAB

I wouldn't use a 5.5 server for a new production email service. You're 10 years out of date.

Have you created am IMS on the server? Would won't get 5.5 to send or receive externally without it.

You need to create an Internet Mail Connector. In Exchange Admin, go to File|New|Internet Mail Connector. This may not be the exact path, but it will get you close enough that you can find it.

I agree with zbnet, though, in that you are using a very outdated, and unsupported, product. There aren't many reasons for using it these days. So, unless you are still running a Windows NT4 network, or just can't afford anything else, give serious consideration to upgrading to Exchange 2000 or 2003.

If you must use 5.5, find a copy of "Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 Unleashed". It has nearly all the info you'll need. O'Reilly's "Exchange Server 5.5 In a Nutshell" makes a great companion for it.

When all else fails, read the book!
