We are soon to decommission our 2003 Exchange environment as we are upgrading to Exchange 2007 and I have concerns over completing recoveries for investigations once the decommission is completed.

Currently I use the Networker Module for Exchange to recover into a Recovery Storage Group for EDB file extraction, but this facility will no longer be present after the decommission. Is there a way to extract the EDB files from savesets without having a 2003 Exchange System or using the Exchange module?

I have attempted a directed recovery using ‘recover –S ssid –d Path’ but this fails – presumably due to not being a standard client created saveset.

Please advise

You can use the exchange Module to recover to Exchange 2007.
If you are upgrading to Exchange 2010 this is no option, therefore you need the nmma 2.3 or better 2.4.
I would advice you to make a virtual machine using vmware converter out of your exchange 2003 system along with one active directory controller. You can use vmware server or the free esxi version to do this.
In this small test area you can restore older mail databases if needed and extract them to pst-files using xmerge. Those pst-files can be imported in every exchange version.

Hi,

we are using the nsrmm 2.4 Module for Exchange 2010 it also works for 2007,
there is a very good Documentation and some useful config checker there where they help you through the installation process.
But you should do what the documents recommends, otherwise you will have some trouble ;-).

We are using it in a ESX virtual DAG Cluster environment wirh Windows server 2008 R2 64-bit mode.
