We have two email gateways and three exchange servers that are located worldwide. My goal is the provide failover if one of the email gateways were to go down. This is not a big problem but I would like to ensure that no email message goes un-received.
My plan is to build this in a test environment but I'd rather not waste my time if it's a bad idea, or won't function the way I expect. So, please, your input and thoughts are appreciated.
Gateway-A and Gateway-B currently only receive mail for their own domains - company-A.com and company-B.com.
Mail is received by an email firewall appliance in the DMZ and is then passed to Exchange-A or Exchange-B server inside the LAN.
Exchange-A and Exchange-B are a part of the same Exchange organization, but in two separate Administration groups. They are directly connected using an Exchange routing group connector.
What I would like to do is add a new lower priority MX record for each domain that would point to the other email gateway.
Ex: company-A.com
5 - Gateway-A
10 - Gateway-B
We would then configure the email firewall to accept mail for this domain and setup an SMTP connector in Exchange to relay mail for the other domain to the appropriate Exchange server.
Ex: on Exchange-B, relay company-A.com to Exchange-A
For this example I’m assuming that email will be queued on Exchange-B until the link to Exchange-A becomes available again. Is that right?
