got a slight problem with one or 2 mailboxes in a delay in delivering mail.
Using eschange server 5.5 and have outlook 97 on client machines. One or 2 users dont receive their email on time, about 5 minute delays, even internal ones. I have tried swapping machines and even deleting and recreating their user and mail boxes but to no avail.....the delays are the same.

Anyone got any idea's why?

No idea where the problem lies. You might want to test where the delay is caused. That should sort out the delays.

1) look at the sender, is it going out of the outbox?
2) look at the server, is it processing on time?
3) look at the recipient, is he/she connected to the server?

what protocol are you using?

Is it not arriving in their mailbox until after everyone else or is it not becoming available in THEIR outlook until later?

On one of the problem PCs log in as someone else and check them compared to the other user.

I presume all the mailboxes are hosted on the same local server and they're not connecting from home / remote office or something?

If OWA is enabled then log in on the problem machine and see if the mail becomes available in OWA before in Outlook.

Does the message appear on it's own or does the user click on something in their Inbox(another email or folder) and then it appears?

If a firewall is installed on the client, it could be blocking the new message notifications sent from the server.

Check to see if the Outlook client is configured to work offline. If so, the client will connect to the server every so often to send and receive messages. This would account for your "delay".

When all else fails, READ THE DAMN BOOK!

Mulroy - you've hit the nail on the head. No firewalls involved tho....its confusing :)

Is your network really busy? New mail notifications are sent from the server as UDP packets - unlike TCP (which is connection-based), UDP is 'fire and forget', and a busy network may well be timing out these packets. Because it's UDP, there's no mechanism to request a resend.

Also, try logging an affected client out of Outlook, and then back in again. This reinitialises the client-server session which can get dropped on a busy network.

You could always upgrade your clients to a more recent(!) version of Outlook, Outlook 2000 SP3 onwards (and Outlook 2003 SP1 onwards) has supported an RPC polling mode of operation that cures this problem. More details from

Don't forget about Windows firewall on XP SP2. The new mail notification is a known issue with XP SP2.

Cheers.

Yes, it would have helped if seanos had mentioned the OS of the clients...

your right it would have helped if i had mentioned the OS....but your also right about it being windows firewall.....boy do i feel stupid.

Thanks for the help peeps.
