Exchange Brick Level ARCserve 11.0 Problems 2

Hi Everyone,

I have spent the last several days attempting to get Brick Level Back-ups working on our network. I just recently assumed responsibilies for our company back-up using ARCserve, and as this is the first time I have worked with it, I am by no means an expert or even skilled ARCserve user. I have read the online manual and over the past several days read many older to new posts and support documents around Brick Level back-ups and their problems/solutions.

My environment is as such:

ARCserve 11.0 installed on (ICECUBE) a Windows 2000 standard server with service pack 4.0. This server replicates Active Directory for our PDC.

ARCserver components that are installed are:

CA Backup Agent for Open Files
CA BrightStor Database Engine
CA BrightStor Discovery Service
CA BrightStor Domain Server
CA BrightStor Job Engine
CA BrightStor Service Controller
CA BrightStor Tape Engine
CA License Client
CA Remote Procedure Call Server

Our Exchange Server is (Lightning). It is a Windows 2003 standard server, service pack 1 running Exchange 2003.

ARCserve components that are installed are:

CA backup Agent for Open Files
CA BrighStor Backup Agent RPC Server

I have been able to successufully back up files and the Microsoft Exchange Server - Database Level(IS); however I cannot seem to get the Brick Level working. I receive the following error when attempting back-up:

E8601
Failed to connect agent. (AGENT=dbaexchis, EC=DBagent RPC Server is not started or not available.)

I have checked that the 'CA BrightStor Backup Agent RPC Server' is started.

When I make a job, I can, under 'Source' select Individual Mailboxes and Public Folders, however when I attempt to 'Start' a job, and the Security and Agent Information appears I cannot get the Brick Level agent to accept a username or password.

When I select 'Agent' and then the 'Use Agent' box, it asks for a user and password; when I attempt to input user account and corresponding password information the Security window appears again with a blank password field. I have entered the username like:

river/administrtor
river.mydomain.com/administrator
administrator

On the Lightning server, where Exchange and the Backup Agent reside I have ensured that the Backup Agent for Microsoft Exchange Configuration has been configured:

TCP/IP Port Number 6070
Number of 64KB blocks in each TCP/IP data transfer 1

Brick Level Coniguration
I select the 'Configure a Backup Agent Service Account to use with Brick Level' check-box. I enter this info:

'Mailbox (alias)' administrator
(I have created an administrator mailbox)
'Service Account' administrator
'Password' admin's password (double checked)
'Confirm Password' admin's password again
'Domain of Account' RIVER

I then select finish.

I have ensured that the administrator accounts belongs to all the groups that are needed to access the Exchange and Directory Objects. I have also reinstalled the Exchange Backup Agent as I read that several times that this can help.

I would very much appreciate your help in pointing me in the right direction.

Brick Level Coniguration
I select the 'Configure a Backup Agent Service Account to use with Brick Level' check-box. I enter this info:

'Mailbox (alias)' administrator
(I have created an administrator mailbox)
'Service Account' administrator
'Password' admin's password (double checked)
'Confirm Password' admin's password again
'Domain of Account' RIVER

I then select finish.

After you clicked Finish , did you get the message - configuration successful ?

If so, open the "services" on the Exchange server, and go to the Backup Agent RPC service.Stop it.
Open the properties of this service and go to the Log on tab. Set it to log as the administrator.

restart the service.

Now try to expand the brick level from the BAB manager

Hi speshalyst

I did receive a 'successful configuration' screen after configuring the connector.

I forgot to mention that I had gone into the Exchange Back-up Agent Service and configured the domain user's account here - the same that I set in the Exchange Back-up Agent Configuration.

I did however re-do this step as you suggested, and I still get the same result. I can select the Brick Level and its' properties in the 'Source', However if I choose 'Start' and am presented with the 'Security and Agent Information' window that has the Security... and Agent... buttons, I can see that the Exchange Agent is not set. I then click on Agent and presented with 'Agent Information' screen. On this screen I select 'Use Agent' and the Security window appears. This is where it repeatedly asks for the User Name and Password.

suggest to check the CA BrightStor Backup Agent RPC Server service account
and can you provider me the brick level backup active log in agent installation directory on exchange server

Hi myauto,

I checked the service account and it was ./administrator. I had specifically set it two days ago to domain/administrator so I don't know why it went back to the local administrator account? I reset it to domain/administrator, restarted the service and then checked it again, and it had retained the domain/administrator setting.

I am not completely sure what the proper log file is so here is dbaexch.log found in the agent installation directory:

Hi,

"Use Agent".. here the "agent" referred to is the Windows Client Agent and not the Exchange Backup Agent.

I presume that you are backing up the Exchange server through the Windows Client Agent tree on the Backup manager.

On the Backup manager, once you add your Exchange server under WindowsNT\2000\Xp Systems,
Right Click on the Exchange server level and put in the credentials that would allow you to gain access to the "exchange server"

Now expand the server on the BAB manager, you should be able to see all the drives and the Exchange database and brick level icons.

Now, right click onthe Brick level Icon and put in the credentials you had used to configure the exchange agent.

Expand the brick level. make your selections.

Start the backup. Do not make any modification on the agent and security . Just run the job.

Lets see how it goes.

I did as you outlined. This time the backup finished without any Agent error. However, I don't think that the Brick-Level backed up. I say this as I tried to restore a calendar from one of the brick level accounts to a new exchange account (as a test) and when the restore operation ran it said that it could not find any sessions

The E8601 error indicates account/login problems again. I attempted the restore 3 times:

1) user = administrator password = *******
2) user = River\administrator password = ******
3) user = River\emtest password = *******

In viewing the Activity Log when the backup process was complete I only saw records of the Private and Pub Information stores being backed up, but I did not see anything relative to individual brick accounts. However as you properly surmised I am attempting to set the Brick Level Backup through the BAB. After the backup completed, I checked to ensure that the Brick Level Backup was still selected in the BAB and that I could still see the accounts that I was trying to backup. I was able to see that the accounts were selected. By the sheer matter that I was able to access and select/deselect brick level accounts would mean that the permisions are set correctly.

I´m having the same problem...

I have 1 Server W2000 SP4 with BA 11.0 (I update now to 11.1 SP1) and 1 Server w2003 SP1 with BA Agent for Exchange for my exchange 2003.

When i try to configure the agent to use brick level they gave me a message: "failed to configure your server"
When i was on exchange 5.5 i used the same configuration and i never had any problem.

You are correct :) I learned that it is easier to see this in the Job Log (see below) as it clearly indicates that the brick-level was succesful.

I very much appreciate you sticking with this and my newbyism to ARCserve!

There are still a few things I don't understand and am hoping that you can clarify them?

1) I know that the brick level mail-boxes are far larger than the 76.74 Mb that is listed as succesfully backed-up? Is this because the rotation is set up as a Mon - Thurs incremental and Friday Full, and ARCserve automaticall performs only an incremental and on Friday I should see the hundreds of megabytes for the full mailboxes?

2) If it succesfully backed up the brick level than why did my restore fail? I know too general of a question, so here is a little more detail:
a) I first created a test Exchange mailbox and initialized
it by sending it an email
b) I then selected one of the user accounts as source
c) I then entered - on three attempts the password for the
user account and tried restoring - it failed. So I did
it again an used the administrators account info and
again it failed to restore.

Can you see anywhere that I may have messed up?

I know that his question should probably be in a new thread, but if you feel it still ties in enough then I would very much appreciate your expetise on this one.

Thanks for the info - great article. As I assumed this job and no documentation was left behind I did not know if the company still is under warranty or can download patches. When I called CA, they did not even have a record of the company, yet the company did provide me with a sheet that had the license agreement, serial numbers and offical stickers of authentic software so I can only sermise that they purchased it. CA would not let me download until I was able to prove that they bought the software. I have sent a copy of the info that I have and am awaiting their approval. This is also important so that I can be listed for updates and the like.

I appreciate you providing this article as I can at least proceed patching -- thanks!

Hey speshalyst, myauto, vschumpy and others,

Just wanted to let you know that I was finally able to do a complete Brick-level back-up and restore! Thanks so much for all your help - especial thanks to speshalyst!

I will have to wait till Saturday to test a full back-up and restore, as I was only able to perfore a restore of incremental days - the version history only went back to Wednesday.

For those interested here is a very specific summary of the things that I needed to do to get this working - this may be of intrest to mcbs25, who previously posted of having similar problems.

[ol]
[li]Ensure that all services including the exchange backup agent service had the domain administrators account set. This meant going onto the Exchange server, accessing the agent, and on the second screen of the wizard, I added the administrator account info. It has to display a message saying something like 'Please wait while the account is verified'[/li]
[li]Go to the server running ARCSERVE manager and access a job (select modify). Under the source tab I right selected the brick level exchange 2003 under the 'Network'. I then selected 'Security' and entered username = administrator and password = *******. It is important to note that on my server it would NOT take the domain\user format, rather it just used user.[/li]
[li]Once the security settings were accepted then the brick level became expandable in the BAB (network directory selection tree). For here I was able to select the Exchange accounts that I wanted to have backed-up.[/li]
[li]As I had already verified the job details hundreds of times in the last few days, I skipped directly to 'start' the job I had just configured in the last step. When the [/li]
[li]When the Security and Agent Information screen appeared I checked that all the correct UserNames and Passwords were set for the different shares. This is VERY IMPORTANT: don't try to set the Agent security for the Brick Level backups on this screen! If you succeeded earlier in selecting the Brick Level accounts in the 'source' tree then you LEAVE IT ALONE on this 'Security and Agent Information' screen. Yes it will show that there is no IP assigned, but this does not matter. If you select the Microsoft Exchange Backup Agent object on this screen and select Security or Agent it WILL INTERFERE with the security that you set in step 2 and you will have to go back to step 2.[/li]
[li]I then scheduled the job and it worked like a charm[/li]
