Hello!

I have this PowerEdge server running SBS 2000 Server. It is a Domain Controller, and it seems something happened on the weekend, that it is now running way too slow. It is also an Exchange server, and because Exchange log files filled up my HD, the services were shut down. I have now about 2.5GB of hard drive space and still having problems.

I had tried Scandisk, Defrag, look at the Event Viewer shows a couple of error shown here thread96-760250 (since I first started in Win2k) and like it ios said in that other thread, I stopped Exchange and restart and the Server works fine. Now, Exchange its like one of the main reasons for this server, so I have no mail. I stopped Exchange because it seems to have some problem with WMI. I just have no clue of what to do, since I cannot see nothing inside Exchange, or in the Administrative console. It won't come up!

Any idea?

Thanks anticipated.

If your exchange logs have filled up your hard drive, they are not being merged because you are probably not running an exchange aware backup. Backup exchange using an exchange aware backup program (the built in 2000 backup software is exchange aware) this will merge the log files and will free up the much needed space on your hard drive.
The logs are in \exchsrvr\mdbdata

Well, I erased the exchange logs manually, and have tried to make the backups, and had no success.

But, I will try again that, since anyways, there's no way to do it now, because Exchange System Manager does not shows up.

Million thanks! Will keep you updated.

Can you check which of the Microsoft Exchange services could not start (in the services console)?
Did you try to apply SP3 for Exchange?
What errors do you have in the event log?

First of all, big thanks for your help!

I have not installed the Exchange Service Pack. It will be my next step. About the Services, the only one not running is the Site Replication Service, which is set to Manual by default (I think). On the other hand, the Exchange System Manager is started, but does not run. Better say, the whole SBS Administrator or Personal Consoles won't run. And guess what, that Exchange System Manager service is the one linked to the Windows Management Iterface service.

Here are the errors in the Event log, after logging in (with Exchange services set to manual at logon).

Source: LoadPerf
Event ID: 3011
Type: Error
Category: 3011
Unloading the performance counter strings for FileReplicaSet failed. The Error code is DWORD 0 of the Record Data.

and...

Source: LoadPerf
Category: None
Type: Error
EventID: 3012
The performance strings in the Performance registry value is corrupted. The Record Data contains BaseIndex value from Performance registry in DWORD 0, LastCounter value in DWORD 1, and LastHelp value in DWORD 2.

Also..

EventID: 60
Source: WinMgmt
Type: Warning
WMI ADAP was unable to process the performance libraries: 0x80041001.

EventID: 46
Source: WinMgmt
Type: Warning
WMI ADAP was unable to retrieve data from the PerfLib localization subkey: , error code: 0x0.

Will keep you posted, and thanks!

Can you create a new mmc and add exchange system manager as a snapin?

One thing to try is stop all exchange services. Start the System Attendant and System Manager. See if you can get into view the store.

Then attempt to mount the database, if this fails. This will tell you the database is corrupt/damaged.. Then run the exchange repair tools to attempt repair..

Hope this helps, PS we have had this problem in the past, one thing to make sure is, if you restore. The option on the server that says, (This database can be overwritten) must be checked to do a full restore.

Update!

When stopping the Microsoft Exchange Management and the Windows Management Instrumentatino services, everything works super fine. i cannot be either one, it has to be both.

Now I found 47 warnings on the Apps Event Viewer of WMI, that happened when both were running yesterday at 4:40PM. (It's 12:50PM of next day). Bad mail folder, is less than 2MB and don't know where else to go!

I will try that one now, and will net you know as soon as it finishes.... Thanks, BTW!

Darren:

I did, but there's no way I can get access to any server tools. No AD, no BackOffice anything, just Win2k Server services like DHCP, DNS, etc.

Something else (sorry for so many posts) the weirdest thing is that users can still send/receive mail, even myself. But no way I can have access to server tools. If, however, I stop the services, and then restart them (after a while) I can go into the Exchange system manager and browse for a while. I cannot open the monitoring tools since it get stuck on that, and have to close it from task Manager. So what I'll do is what troutmak told me and lets see what happens.

Thanks a lot!

If people are sending/receiving mail then the stores are mounted/mountable and your database is not corrupt. You could always install the exchange tools on another server, this will give you management access. We have one company, who, like yours, we can't access the system manager, so we manage it from another machine.

Aha... I just realized that the store is mounted. About the installation in another server, We don't have another server. I started the Mailbox Management Process.. and after it finishes, will install the Exchange Service Pack 3 and the Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 to see what happens. Any comments?
