Exchange backups failing due to corrupt emails

Hi all,

I backup my exchange server using Veritas Backup Exec 10 but the job is failing during the verification phase as its flagging corrupt messages in 3 users mailboxes. I've experienced this in the past and have overcome the problem by simply going to the mailbox and removing the corrupt email. But as you will see from my log file, there is no subject for the emails (except one called MWAH which I found) or any clue that I can use to find the corrupted emails.
From searching other posts I am aware that there is a registry change that allows you to bypass the corrupted emails so that the backup job passes. Although I would rather not resort to this as its not fixing the problem.

Here is the job log and I would be most grateful for any advice. Please note that the characters (??????) in the log actually appear as only the boxes, the other characters have been inserted during the copy/paste.

What if you went to the user's mailbox, sorted by subject and went through the e-mails with a blank subject. Then either delete them if they are garbage, or create a subfolder and place them in that subfolder. Then deselect that folder for backup?

Thanks for the response.

I've tried that already but there are so many emails that have no subject. (the next thing on my list is reducing users mailbox sizes the previous IT manager has let everyone have unlimited space.)

Yes, do that immediately, you can't let them be unlimited. Also, yes there is a registry change that you can make which may be the quickest way for you to fix it. I forget what the change is, but I'm sure you can search it on the Veritas site.
Can you get a successful backup if you just backup the Information Store and not individual mailboxes? That may be another alternative.

Generally with this prob, the IS is fine. There used to be a reg hack for backup exec for ignore this error when specifying the job as completed or failed. Should be on the veritas site somewhere.
