We use Microsoft SBS2003 R2 with Exchange 2003 and Sophos PureMessage as a Virus and Spam filter.

PureMessage will add a Microsoft SCL score to each email, so we can decide to put suspected mail in the users junk email folder. We only want to work with the PurMessage SCL values and not the one from IMF in Exchange. So we do not have the IMF active for the SMTP virtual server.

But message are not being put in the using junk email folder, even though I can the emails are getting the correct scores from PureMessage.

So my question is...

Does the IMF need to be active in the SMTP virtual server settings, before the mailbox store will check and file the email above the global setting, in to the users junk email folder?

We use Sophos AV on our network and for some years we also used PureMessage on the Exchange servers, I found PM a bit flaky and needing constant attention, the IMF never worked for me, I switched to an external filtering service which had the effect of freeing up bandwidth, we dont have to download all the spam, our filtering service gets it, we dont.

We got it to work in the end.

Was nothing to do with PureMessage. It was doing exactly what it should do.

It was the server side rule in out that was corrupted. Had to download the Microsoft MAPI editor and delete the Junk E-mail rule.

Now it works great!

... and no, IMF does not need to be active on the SMTP virtual server. It is all done at the Exchange store.
