You can only access other accounts on your Exchange server if you have permission to do so. You can only achieve this by double clicking on the Mailbox you need to access, then clicking on the Permisions tab then click on the add button to add your NT account with a user's role.

Hope this assists you!!!

Actually, as administrator, you do not need to give yourself permission. Setup a profile for the mailbox you want to open and change the logon security to NONE. When you go to open the mailbox it will ask you for a user name, domain, and password. Use the exchange admin user name and password. Bodda-bing, you're in someone else mailbox.

Best way to open someone elses mailbox is to ask them to open it for you. Avoids any misunderstandings, I find.

Or has this become a hackers forum while I wasn't looking.

I'm with Simon - it's more polite to let the user know what you're doing, and get their consent. A co-worker in my facility was once working on someone's e-mail issue and found out that a user's wife was pregnant before the user did. That's a situation to be avoided.

I aggree you do not open another mailbox just for fun, it's bad manners.
You have a Exchange admin Login. Give yourself the same rights as a backup. With these rights you can open any mailbox without any further logins or permissions.

Hope this helps

We have to sign a confidentiallity statement when we are employeed, so I see it as part of my job to just not mention what I see. As a system admin I find myself logging in to users mailboxes all the time troubleshoot. I don't go there to read their mail. If a manager or director want's to read a subordiantes mail, I give them access.

thanks guys for the help.

as for the security issue. i agree with you 100% that a sysadmin is not supposed to pry into other user's mailbox. although there will always come a time that this may need to be done but only in official matters. this is not supposed to develop as a habit.

the response to my other question is not clear. can i also open system mailboxes? what is actually inside that mailbox? it shows too many contents.

If by system mailboxes you mean Postmaster, Administrator, etc, then yes.
