Our DC is @ 2003. We currently have Ex55 in 6 offices around the country. Each remote office has 1 server that acts as a DC (Win2k) and Ex55 Server. In my test lab (upgrading Ex55 to Ex2k3), I found that if Ex55 was on a Win2k DC, my upgrade machine(Win2k3, installing Ex2k3) could not see the Ex55 Server. If I DCPromo'ed the Ex 55 Win2k machine, my upgrade machine could then see the Ex55 Win2k machine and the upgrade proceeded as planned.

The question:
Can my remote office Ex55 servers exist on DC's or do I need to dcpromo them to member servers prior to the upgrade?

Thkanks.

you don't upgrade to member servers.

your problem is probably down to AD connectors that need installing.
