i just started working for a new company and i have little experience with exchange, anyways i have no idea about how to setup exchange so they can use email, i.e internet mail service. what do i need to do?

do i need to have a ISP do configuring? DNS alias records?
do i need to configure the exchange server to do anything
how do i configure the mail to goto a exchange server on the network?

obviously i sound like a moron
but its a chance ill take.

Someone will be providing your internet connection. You will need to know if they are hosting your DNS for you as well.

You will need an MX record in DNS pointing to your mail server.

You sound like you already ahve teh IMS setup. I would make sure to trun relay incomming email off in the connector.

Do you have a dedicated internet connection / IP addresses?

There is an excellent book that is dedicated to the topic of configuring the Internet Mail Service within Exchange. You can get it on Amazon or other book resellers like Barnes and Noble, etc. The title and author is:

The Microsoft Exchange Server Internet Mail Connector
Author: Spyros Sakellariadis
Publisher: Duke Press ... Duke Communications

It was invaluable for me and is still quite handy. I covers everything along with DNS issues and many other things!

David Hale

already found that book 3-5 weeks back ordered :)

ok i have a static IP address and my DNS is hosted.
i do have a FQDN. after my isp adds a MX record what else would i need to do or have them do?

If your address space matches the dns entry added by your isp and you have installed the IMS then you should be all set.

You can check your addresses under the configuration container the site addressing tab. Make sure you can resolve DNS names from the server.

If you have any specific probles post them.
