Does anyone kow the best way to link Exchange 5.5 to use a router instead of dialup?

Yes i want to drop using my internet dialup account to use ADSL for mail as well as internet use. I have configured the server and all workstations to use the router for internet but i am not sure how to use the router for the IMS

Well you will want the gateway to the router setup on that machine. Then under Message delivery use DNS and set transfer mode to inbound/outbound.

At least, thats how we have our DSL configured through a router ;)

Grenage is correct. You set up the server as if it were going to surf the web but now you have to deal with security.
