We currently are running Exchange 5.5 in our current domain. We are setting up a brand new domain and don't want the two domains to ever see each other but we need to convert the old Exchange 5.5 Database to be used on Exchange 2003.
Your cleanest solution is to create matching user accounts in the new domain either by hand, script or migration via ADMT. Then on the old email server, export all mailboxes using ExMerge. You can then import the PST files created by ExMerge into the new server.
For the Public folders it is easiest to copy them to a PST from a workstation on the old domain then use an Outlook client on the new domain to import the data back in.
Tried using ExMerge and seem to be running into a lot of hurdles.
The First hurdle was that the version of ExMerge didn't work on our current Exchange Server (Exchange 5.5/NT 4.0 Server). I finally found an older version of ExMerge (v.3.71).
Next is when I attempt to import the .PST files into the Exchange 2k3 mailboxes I get this error.
Error configuring message service (MSPST MS) (MAPI_E_EXTENDED_ERROR) (CMapiSession::CreateEMSPSTProfile)
The only info that I was able to find on this error was either the .pst file was set to read only(which it is not) or if I try to use a Outlook 2003 .pst file that could cause the error also (Which I am not).
Keep in mind that Exmerge versioning is a pain. If you're going to run Exmerge right on the 5.5 server, you need the 5.5 version, which is availble here:
Thanks for all of your help guys. The versions worked great and I also figured out the problem with the error. It was the Send As and Receive As permissions are set to DENY by default in 2003 (Even for the enterprise admin acct.) Once I changed it I was good to go.
