Hi,I have two questions if anyone can help..

1. I installed exchange 5.5 service pack 4 today and part way through it came up with an error saying "winnnt/system32/something.dll was in use" abort retry ignore, I clicked on ignore. Will this cause any problems?
2. When i checked that all services were started all the ones set to automatic had started, three others were set to manual and not running these are:
MS EXCHANGE DIRECTORY SYNCHRONISATION
MS MAIL CONNECTOR INTERCHANGE
MS MAIL + FREE / BUSY CONNECTOR
What are these and do they need to be running?
Thanks in advance

1. No - from memory that's expected.
2. If they are manual, you may well not need them in your organisation. Leave them as they are. DirSync is for multiple Exchange servers, MS Mail parts are for links to MS Mail systems.

Do you have anything not working?

Thank you for prompt reply...no everything else is working it is just that it is a new installation on a new server, I soppose i am just being over cautious!
are there any other patches i should install or does service pack 4 cover them all?

Once again thanks, looks like 5 or 6 patches that i need!

Make sure your list of patches definitely includes the latest rollup hotfix for 5.5, KB841765 - it's the closest you'll ever come to an SP5 for this version (it's in the list on the page that Zel's link points to).

Zel's 5.5 knowledge is (understandably) starting to fade a bit after all these years; the MS Exchange Directory Synchronisation Service is for directory synching between the Exchange org and the connected MS Mail network, hence why you see it alongside the MS Mail Connector service. These two and the free/busy service should have been removed when the MS Mail network they interfaced with was decommissioned.

Oh yeah, I forgot that zb. Well it has been about 3 years since I last used a 5.5 in anger...

Thanks for info, I have downloaded all 5-6 patches listed on that site ready to install, do I still need to install them all or just the roll-up patch, or does it not matter if the other 4 are installed aswell?

You can check what the rollup includes on the KB article about it. Standard practice is to install hotfixes in the order they were released, otherwise there is a slight risk you might overwrite changes.

To all,

Thank you once again for your replies
