My response seems to have disappear from the site so here goes again.

Test Network
2 Servers
1 laptop (for client aspect)

First server is a NT BDC removed from the network(retired)
Second server standalone server with vertias and Exchange 5.5

goal: test out the upgrade to Exchange 2000

Exchange server setup to copy the name and setup of production server. Restore was done to create all of the mailboxes that are currently running. (during restore I was getting the same message of access denied to \\Server\Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes but the exchange directory and information store worked fine) turns out though that the mailboxes are there anyway.

My goal now is to backup the server so I can restore if I muck things up.

So I click on the mailboxes and it asks me to to type in the unique name which is Veritas but there is nothing else sharing that name. Yet it keeps saying that it won't work

things worth mentioning.

NT BDC has been upgraded to W2kAdvSrv DC

You say that you have 2 servers, but the NT BDC was removed from the network , correct? So, basically you have 1 server left now? Do you have another test server not mentioned that you installed Exchange 2K on that you are testing? If so, is the test Ex2K box part of the network, or on a separate isolated network?

Sorry I'll clariy.

the 2 servers are my test network.
the NT BDC was taken from the live network and is now on my test network upgraded to w2k AdvSrvr

So my entire test network is this

2 W2kAdvSrvr
1 Laptop with w2kpro

1 server setup as a DC with the accounts from the live network (upgraded from NT BDC from live network)
1 with Veritas Backupexec & Exchange Server 5.5

once I can complete a full backup of the exchange 5.5 setup I will install Exchange 2000 on the DC and test out moving mailboxes over. Then use my laptop to test out the client side of it.

I plan to install Exchange on the DC I would not plan to do that on a production network but I just want to test some of the functions in Exchange 2000.

You can't restore the directory to a different server as it uses SIDs. Restore the mail store but not the directory or the mailboxes. Then use the consistency adjuster.

You'll now be able to get into the mailboxes using the administrator logon. Or export the users to CSV and import them to the new server.

Hope that you used flush committed logs option in BE or the database won't necessarily come back...

I named the standalone server on the test network the same as the mail server on our live network and it restored fine.

I've run the consistency adjuster and it said everything is okay.

I can backup the Exchange Directory and the Exchange Information Store, but I still cannot select Exchange Mailboxes.

I am using a mailbox called Veritas for the unique name and it does not work. So I've tried to use the fully qualified name, but I run into some confusion.

When I check the .x400 address it is something like this
c=US;a= ;p=<Company Name>;o=<Company abbreviation>;s=Veritas;g=Veritas;cn=Veritas

When I look under the Registry it shows
Hkey_L_M\System\CurrentControlSet\Service\MSExchangeMTA\Paramerters\X500 DN
/o=Company Name/ou=Company Abbreviation/cn=Configuration...

So if I fill in the fully qualified name, do I enter
o=company name/ou=Company Abbriviation/cn=Recipients/cn=Veritas?

Thanks,
NR

You need to have a MAPI client like Outlook installed on your Backup Exec box

I thought that was for exchange 2000. We currently have exchange 5.5 running without one. (Mapi client that is)

Backup Exec needs a MAPI client installed on the Backup server, regardless if it's 5.5 or 2000

You need Outlook installed and you need Outlook configured to use the Backup Exec's account that you specified during the installation. You also need to log in as that account, I believe?
