My Exchange 5.5 server had crashed. I followed the outline in one of the threads posted here and brought the server up with new mdbdata files. I later recovered the mailboxes and merged the pst files into the mailboxes on the production server.

It has been several days and my Outlook clients still receive a prompt that the exchange server is recovering when they attempt to connect.

Also I am getting errors when I attempt to load or save mailbox rules.

The server is processing mail, the public and private databases appear to be consistent

Any advise would be appreciated.

Joe

Get the clients thus affected to recreate their client mapi profiles.

Thanks zbnet. A new profile handles the recovery prompt. I am still unable to retreive the mailbox rules. the prompt is "Some of your rules could not be retrieved intact. They have been marked appropriately..."

Any thoughts?

Well now. This is a side-effect of how you have attempted to restore the service - it's not necessary to reinvent the wheel when MS have done all the hard work for you defining a DR system for Exchange 5.5 (faq10-6004).

That said; inbox rules are stored in 2 places: both on the client (in .rwz files), and any that affect incoming email are also stored on the server so that it has a copy of them and can use them even when the client isn't logged on. This server-side copy of the rules lives in a hidden folder within the mailbox that made them, called the Associated Messages folder. If you used ExMerge to make the recovery PSTs, this has an option to include the Associated Messages folder in the PST, thus allowing these rules to be copied to the 'new' mailbox. If not, I suspect it is because of a mismatch between the client-stored rules and the server-stored rules for these revcovered users.

Try Exporting the rules from Outlook, and then reimporting them. Or simply delete the .rwz files on the affected clients, which should then clear the corrupted rules out from these mailboxes, and then recreate the rules afresh.

Thanks again for the update. Yes I did use exmerge to import the recovered mailboxes on the production server.

I have started outlook with the /cleanrules and cleanserverrules switch. The client rules have been removed however the server side rules were not. I get the same message when I try to load the rules "Some of your rules could not be retrieved intact. They have been marked appropriately..." Some of the rules were created with different versions of Outlook. I am currently running 2003.

Is there a safe method to correct or remove the server rules?

Joe

Use the inbox rules manager to find all your exchange rules. You might need to delete them and recreate new ones.

Thank you for the response. The Outlook rules manager was unable to retreive the rules from the exchange server. I wound up using mdbvue to clear the rules on the server.
