Exchange 5.5 on Windows 2000 1

Currently I have Exchange 5.5 on Windows NT 4.0 and am looking at possibly upgrading that server to Windows 2000.

Simple question: can Exchange 5.5 work on Windows 2000 or do I need to upgrade Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000? If Exchange 5.5 does work on Windows 2000, are there significant limitations that are removed by upgrading the Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000:

Upgrading just NT is quite easy. Putting AD into the mix means running the Exchange / AD integration utility which means you need to be happy with AD first.

You can put a new 2000 server straight in instead. Either way you need Exch5.5 SP3 at least.

Note that this is not an easy thing to do to a live server as there are several programs on your NT server that probably won't run in 2000 - like the rest of Back Office except for SQL, maybe your backup software, your NIC diagnostic software and so on.

In theory not too tough though - try it on a lab machine first rather than your main production server...

5.5 works great on Win2k. Be aware of the port change if the server is a DC. We usually raise 5.5 to port 390 for LDAP. Dan
