Exchange 2007 and Renamng a domain name

Hi all

I just wanted a second opinion please.
we are going to get Exchange 2007 and renaming our Domain name as well. So should I rename the domain name first then get Exchange 07 up and runing later, or it does not matter either way. Renaming a Domain name can be done in 2003 server environment, but I anm not quite sure whether we can do the same thing on Exchange 07.

IIRC, domain rename is not supported in Exchange 2007. Rename first.

Someone has suggested that we need to REBUILD the domain name rather than RENAME. Since I am not Exchange expert.

You can rename a domain with/without Exchange 2003 in it. Once you introduce 2007, you can't rename.

Not so sure I'd recommend a rebuild if there aren't any issues.

Don't create a new domain, rename THEN bring Ex2007 in.

Thanks a lot for your replies

Currently we don't have any Exchange server, I am going to build soon. I believe in Wins server 2003 environment we can RENAME domain.
Because if I had to REBUILD domain name, there would be a tonne of task to take into account.
So it would be so much easier if I could just RENAME domain name then bring Exchange 07 aboard without any issues later on. that would be great. Please confirm. Mil thanks guys.

Yes you can rename your 2003 domain before putting Exchange 2007 in.

Make sure you read all the documentation carefully and that you understand what is happening when you do the rename. I also suggest testing the rename procedure in a test lab so you are familiar with the procedure.

FYI - The reason I was told as to why you can't rename after Exchange 2007 is in place is because it stamps FQDNs and GUIDs all over the place in AD and the rename procedure just can't handle all of these GUIDs and FQDNs. But oddly having Exchange 2007 servers won't stop you doing a rename, IE it won't pop up and say whoa hold on you have exchange 2007 installed you can't do this. Instead it will probably break something quite badly....
