Hi all,
Here's a wierd one I've been encountering with our 2K3 mailstore of late. First off, the mailstore is large -- pushing 70GB, but there is a lot of whitespace in it since I've been trying to clean up old emails that people have ignored. Twice now, the server has started it's nightly automated cleanup and I believe at the point where it would start the online defrag it makes the server unresponsive. After a hard shutdown, it starts to replay the logs as part of the soft recovery and hangs up again when it nears the end. If I restore the last nights backup, everything is fine. I've turned off the maintenance and it ticks along ok, but I'd like to figure out what is up. The application logs really don't tell me much onther than it's either started on online defrag, or is performing a soft recovery when this happens. I've dealt with database corruption before and it was more cut and dry than this.... any thoughts would be appreciated.

Probably 10-12GB of whitespace. Running 2K3 Standard.

The last time the online defrag for the mailbox store ran without a hitch it said it had 8479MB of free space. Since then I've been cleaning up more of the mailboxes, so there should be more than that available. The backups are running fine every night. After all this cleanup, I'll probably run an offline defrag to shrink the mailstore. Anyone think that might help resolve this issue?
