i would appreciate if someone can answer my question.
is it possible to build an exchange 2003 server from scratch and be able to copy the database files of another exchange server and run the exmerge utility to export the database to .pst files

thanks

Yes. You can build a new server and do this. Depending on budget, Aelita Recovery Manager does it a great deal easier.

Is the old server still running? If so why not use the Move feature or use ExMerge right from the start to export the mail to PST files?

Or is your question due to a failed server?

I hope you find this post helpful.

Regards,

Mark

thank you all for your advises.

the reason y i ask is because i work for the forensic dept of NY and we had to copy the entire exchange database of a company being investigated. so i was wondering if that could be done, but doing some researches i was able to build the entire server from scratch and use the exmerge utility.
thank u all.

If this is going to be a recurring thing, you need to look into ontrack's powercontrols. Dead database, live database, on tape, etc. If the data can be extracted, it will - without exchange. A very fast tool with excellent search capabilities.

XMSRE, i just tried powercontrol free version and it does what i was looking for.

thank u for your advice

The next question is, as you work on these data recovery projects, where do you put the data? On you workstation? Server? SAN?

If you have centralized storage in your organization, and are storing the data on a SAN while you work on it, who is the SAN vendor? If it's Netapp, just buy the SMBR tool. It's licenced from ontrack and is powercontrols.
