Is it possible to run Exchange 2000 on a server that is running 2003?

Short answer is no. Long answer is that some people have reported success in running Exchange 2K on Windows 2K3, but it is not supported by Microsoft.

Yes it can be done only if your domain controller and Active Directory are windows 2003. You pretty much need an entire 2003 environment to avoid problems.

Our DC and active directory are 2000 so I think it is best if we go ahead and purchase a new server with 2000 and then load our Exchange 2000 on that box so we can avoid problems and then look into upgrading our entire network to 2003 at a later time. Thanks!

Good call. I had the same config then I added in a 2003 server and tried to install exchange 2000. Discovered at that point that 2003 AD was needed to run Exchange 2000 on a 2003 server. All very complicated.....

Good luck,
Mia
