I am having problems with the microsoft exchange event service which will not start

Windows 2000 SP4, exchange 2000 with SP3

Exchange has installed, ive added a test mailbox with an SMTP mail address and send test mail to it. I can see the mail is hitting the new account, by expanding the information store.

Now when I try to create a mapi profile, I enter the exchange server name then the first few letters of the mailbox, usually when clicking on check name it will fill in the rest of the name and create the mapi profile. Have also tried entering the full alias but to no avail.

Have tried a mixture of mapi clients, tried outlook 2000 but am testing with XP, same problem with each.

The error returned on creating the profile on screen is The action could not be completed. The name could not be matched to a name in the address list

The following error appears in the application event log

Quote:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSExchangeES
Event Category: General
Event ID: 5
Date: 06/10/2003
Time: 11:52:09
User: N/A
Computer: EXCH1
Description:
An unexpected MAPI error occurred. Error returned was [0x80004005].

Firstly the microsoft exchange event service is set to run under localsystem. If I change this to a domain administrator the account will actually start but I can still not match a profile to a name in the address list.

Ive tried entitled XADM: Exchange 2000 Event Service Event: An Unexpected MAPI Error Occurred

This prompts you to expand public folders, and then view the system folders and I should be looking for a duplicate instance of EventConfig_servername folder. This is only listed once so this isnt the problem

Ive reinstalled SP3 and am still having no luck. The account will actually start using a domain administrator rather than local system, so im not sure if the exchange event service is causing the problem, but from most documentation of the mapi error it seems to point to this service. Even with it started I cannot match names from the distribution list to create an initial mapi profile.

----------------------->

Scenario 2 Specify a valid Microsoft Exchange Server name for HomeServer and prompt for a MailboxName. For example:
<ENTER MAILBOX NAME HERE>

When the user starts Outlook, the following error message is displayed:

The name could not be matched to a name in the address list.

When you click OK, the Microsoft Exchange Server dialog box is displayed. The Mailbox field will contain the above text. Since the server name is already entered, the user enters his or her name in the Mailbox field and clicks Check Name to resolve the name to the appropriate server and mailbox.

When configuring the HomeServer and MailboxName values, the following scenarios are possible:

Scenario 1 If either the HomeServer or MailboxName entry is left blank, the Microsoft Exchange Server service will not be created. Also, if no Personal Folders (PST) service has been specified or created in the profile, the following error message may be displayed when starting Outlook:
Unable to open your default e-mail folders. Outlook could not start
because a location to send and receive mail could not be found. To
add a location, such as a personal folder file, double-click the Mail
icon in Windows Control Panel.
To correct this behavior, the user should add either the Microsoft Exchange Server service, or a PST service.

Scenario 3 In this scenario, you specify a prompt for user input for both HomeServer and MailboxName, as follows:
HomeServer: <ENTER SERVER NAME HERE>
MailboxName: <ENTER MAILBOX NAME HERE>
When the user starts Outlook, the following error message is displayed because the server name cannot be found. This is expected, but annoying:
Network problems are preventing connection to the Microsoft Exchange
Server computer. Contact your system administrator if this condition
persists.
When the user clicks OK, the following error message is displayed:
The action could not be completed.
Clicking OK again causes the Microsoft Exchange Server dialog box to appear and prompt the user for the required information.

Scenario 4
Create or use a custom utility that automatically determines the current user's logon name and populates the MailboxName value in the registry or in a custom .PRF file. This option is more dynamic and allows for less user interaction. For example, you could create a batch file to retrieve the user's logon name. This batch file could then be set up as a Microsoft Internet Express component in step 2 of the ODW, which would run at the end of the installation.

Event-ID: 5
Source: MSExchangeES
Type: Error
Category: General
Description:
A unexpected MAPI error occurred. Error returned was [0x80004005]

If you receive this error the Microsoft Exchange Event Service may have encountered a major problem. The only supported workaround seems to remove and re-add the Microsoft Exchange Event Service service.

or Description:
A unexpected MAPI error occurred. Error returned was [0x8040107]

Before removing the Microsoft Exchange Event Service as a solution, verify that this server is a public folder server. If the Microsoft Exchange server is not a public folder server, the Microsoft Exchange Events Service will not start.

Sorry, forgot:
Delete both instances of the EventConfig_servername folder, and then restart the Event Service:
Ensure that the Events.exe process is not running in Task Manager.
In Exchange 2000 System Manager, view system folders. For additional information, Microsoft Knowledge Base:

XADM: How to View System Folders in Exchange 2000 Server

Rename one of the instances so that both can be deleted. If you try to delete one while a duplicate exists, you will get a warning informing you that you must rename one of the folders.
Delete both instances of the EventConfig_servername folder.
Restart the Event Service. This recreates a single instance of the EventConfig_servername.

i have deleted the instance of EventConfig_servername and when i restart the service it stops after about 10 seconds with the 8004005 error again. the key is still gone from system manager. maybe my problem now is that it is not rebuilding the new key?

Hi Folks,
be sure that the Account, using for the Exchange Event Service has the Full Permissions to the public folder Store, and also Full Permission to the First Mailbox Store in the First Storage Group.

This will help
