exchange 2000 & VPN

greetings....

we have an exchange 2000. my outlook does not send out email to outside while i use VPN. it send out email within the cooperation with VPN connection. i use POP/SMTP. if i use exchange protocol in outlook it works. can some one tell me what is wrong. thanks.
