I have recently installed an SBS-2000 server and had problems with the Exchange Transaction logs filling up the drive and bringing down the server. I think I have fixed this by enabling circular logging and moving the logs to another drive.

The question is why is it happening. During the week, a few log files are created per day. Sometime near midnighht on Saturday the system starts producing one log file every 15 seconds until the disk fills. Is the server being attacked via it's ADSL internet link or is there some housekeeping task that starts up?

Sounds like your scanning the M drive with Anti-Virus or the Exchsrvr folders. If so stop it ASAP! Dan

Thanks Dan, you're right and now I've changed that.

I've currently got Backup Exec saving the mailboxes, the information store, the M: drive and the physical drive. I guessed that isn't efficient but I didn't think about it causing problems. Does backing up those folders irritate Exchange the same way as the virus scan?

YES stop that!

You can't restore them so don't back them up like that. Only backup the Store with the GUI for Exchange. Dan

Hey Dan...

When you say the "GUI for Exchange"; are you talking about Veritas, or something else?

Thanks! AJ

Thanks Dan,

I changed the back-up selection and all appeared well for a few days.

Suddenly, late yesterday morning, the server slowed right down due to high activity on the C: drive (where Exchsrvr is) and some on the E: drive (where the log files are). At the same time outgoing SMTP mail stopped arriving at destinations but incoming is OK. No undeliverable messages are received, it just looks to Outlook that they went OK.

Any ideas what's happening?

The ISP involved has just started trying to get the business of supporting the new server - that couldn't be connected, could it?

Additional info re exchange problems

The latest position is that outgoing emails are getting out but only hours after being sent.

The server c drive and e drive are still tied up

The processes that appear to be doing this are:
inetinfo.exe
store.exe

both of these are constantly increasing their memory useage and are currently using 200mb and 54mb respectively. The server is using over 800mb. Cpu useage is modest.

Further info

we have obviously become the target of spamming or a virus has got thru NAV as when we were finally able to open the queues they are full of mail which has not been generated here

We need to clear all the queues?

Is there a way to mass delete the queues or do we need a reinstall of Exchange Server?

I am having very similar problems, particularly when you mention possible spam email and the memory-hungry processes.

From this discussion I assume we should set our backup software to only backup the mailboxes and information store using the Exchange Agent and exclude the Exchange part of the physical disk?

Please confirm if you have a solution to the above problems.
