I have been receiving this error message when I try to install the Windows98 Upgrade SE: Exception 06 occurred @ 0028:C000364E in VXD VMM(01)+0000264E. Called from (same as above). I have an IBM Aptiva 2137-E34. I have been searching the internet for weeks and have come up with bits and pieces of help info. but nothing that exactly relates to my problem. I have come to the conclusion that the problem exists in the internal cache because when I disable it, Windows installs without any errors. Is there a way for me to fix the problem? I have read through the thread "VMM errors--Cannot install 98 (orME") posted by "odonnela", but I am not surre that we are experiencing the same issue since that error was an "OE" and mine is "06". My system is as follows:
200W power supply
System board form factor: ATX
System board chipset: V58XA-1
Processor speed: IBM K6 233MHz
Memory (type): 66MHz SDRAM DIMM
Video Chipset: ATI Rage II+

The error occurs when Windows98 Setup begins to copy files. Since the install cannot be completed, I use the Product Recovery CD which re-installs Windows95.

If anyone has a suggestion I would greatly appreciate it. I am willing to try anything. Thanks for your time.

This is what the 06 stands for.
06: Invalid Opcode fault

This error is returned if any one of the following conditions are true:

The processor tries to decode a bit pattern that does not correspond to any legal computer instruction

The processor attempts to execute an instruction that contains invalid operands

The processor attempts to execute a protected-mode instruction while running in virtual 8086 mode.

The processor tries to execute a LOCK prefix with an instruction that cannot be locked.

Now Before you install Win98SE do youmake sure ALL non essential programs are off? Do a Ctrl+Alt+Del and ensure all BUT explorer are gone (Explorer should be the only one there). Especially Anti-Virus programs. Please let us (Tek-tips members) know if the solutions we provide are helpful to you. Not only do they help you but they may help others.

Thank you for your quick reply. All programs are off except for Explorer and a Windows application SYSTRAY.EXE. Since SYSTRAY is listed after Explorer, I cannot disable it.

Actually if you do the endtaks enough it will kill the SYSTRAY. Please let us (Tek-tips members) know if the solutions we provide are helpful to you. Not only do they help you but they may help others.

You didn't specify exactly how much ram you have or how much space you have on your hard drive to install Win98. Are you installing original version of Win98 or SE? Minimum ram needed for Win98 is 24MB (of course more is always advisable). Upgrading from Win95 you need at least 205MB of hard drive space and this can go as high as 400MB. Check these things and let me know if this helps.

Knack,

In answer to your questions, I am installing Win98 Upgrade SE. Standard RAM is 32MB and maximum is 256MB. (I am providing you this information from a tech. spec. sheet, I will double check the current settings tonight.) Do you think that I need more RAM? The hard file is 4.3GB. This computer has had this exact version of Win98 Upgrade SE installed successfully on it before. Several error messages began to occur and system would hang. I was advised to wipe-out everything and start fresh.

James, I have disabled the Systray.exe file and tried installing Win98 and I once again received the above stated Exception error. When I re-installed Win95 from the Product Recovery CD I received the Exception error again when I was restarting after the install.

Any suggestions? I thank you both for your help.

RAM is 32MB and hard disk space is 3.55GB. Should I add more memory???

At our lab, we find that 64 megs is a minimum amount of acceptable memory to run Win 98se on our 233's. At home, I have 128 megs and am satisfied. Memory is so cheap now that the only real hurdle to adding memory, cost, is not a factor anymore.

Thank you, I will look into getting more memory and then trying to install again. Thanks for your advice.

I ran 98SE on an old P166 with only 32mb ram quite succesfully. No problems. SO, maybe it's not a ram problem ?

I will wait to see if I hear any more suggestions from all of you. Thank you for your advice.

TXhusker.

Are you running any virus scanning software, such as Mcafee virus scan or Norton antivirus ?

No, I have already checked this in the autoexec.bat file and there is not a virus program that is automatically loading during startup.

OK. try this:

Backup your autoexec.bat file
Then try to run setup as usual
At the point you get the fatal exception error,
Restart your computer, press and hold down the CTRL key until the Windows 98 Startup menu appears, and then choose Command Prompt Only.
At the command prompt, type edit c:\autoexec.bat, and then press ENTER.
Type rem at the start of any line that starts any unnecesary programs that may load during start up
Save and then close the Autoexec.bat file.
Restart your computer. Setup should continue.

Let me know

Thank you for your advice Kwunder, I did try this but I received 2 more additional error messages instead of the original and I was not ablt to continue with Win98 set-up.
The error messages I received were "Hwinfo" fault in module KERNAL32.DLL @ 157:bff7b432. Also, "Exception 0E 0028:C0026424 VXD VFAT01 0000330C". The contents of my autoexec.bat file are:
@ECHO OFF
SET BLASTER =A220 I5D1T4
LH DOSKEY

I am still receiving the origianl 06 error message when I use the Product Recovery CD to setup Wii95. It appears when the initializing Windows Messaging, Printer Setup, etc. after the restart.

Any suggestions?

Have you tried replacing your RAM? You should be able to install Win98 fine on 32Meg (heck I have even installed on 16 meg). I have seen where bad RAM will give exception errors on install of 98. Try different RAM then reinstall 98. See if that works. James Collins
