I'm trying to use wrap text on a cell and it's not working. When I try to use the shrink to fit it comes out to small I can't even read it. Help!

Hi Coach38,

What version of Excel are you using? Also, can you give us a step-by-step of what you have tried so far?

You state that "it's not working" but you don't say what it IS doing.

Thanks
GS

Hey, GS

I'm using Excel 2003 with SP2.

I did the following:

type text <enter>
hightlight the cell
right-click & select format cell
select alignment - wrap text
nothing happens
the text information is still larger than the cell

Is this the standard behavior in all the workbooks, or is it specific to that workbook?

Good luck,
Engin

If your cell is MERGED with any other cell, the text will not automatically wrap.

Have you increased the row height to give multiple lines of text room to display?

Excel does not always do this automatically.

You can also try CNRL+1, and in Alignment tick the box "Wrap text"

Sometimes when I select "Wrap Text", it seems I need to go back into the cell (like you are editing) and press the Enter or Tab keys.

With the cell selected:
Format, Row, Autofit
(If this works be aware you can select several rows and autofit them all at the same time)

If it does not work then:

After you have set wrap text then:
Does the text display over the cell to the right or is it simply not visible? Please clear the contents of the cell on the right to perform the test.

With the cell selected try Format, Cells, Alignment what are all the settings please?

You can also try to put the cursor where you want to break the line and press Alt+Enter.

My 2c (1.27c during recession).

Go to Format, Cells, Number tab, set it to General.

Another Victim of the recession

Thanks, guys

Sorry, for the late response...I was working on another shift. I tried all of the above and nothing. I just added a lot of information and I didn't want to lose it. I just created a new spread sheet and manually copy everything over. thanks again!

SUCCESS!!!

I had been getting a row of ######## as wide as the cell (in some rows, not all!), had it set for autofit and text-wrap, but kept getting only that one row of #########.

Some of my comments are a dozen lines long and some change daily, so manually inserting alt-enters just cannot work for me.

I changed the column of cells (using the Format-Cell's Number tab) from TEXT to GENERAL.

That did it!
