Excel Workbook trys to open, does not open - no err message 3

I have an excel workbook on our network. When you go into the workbook and double click on it, it opens excel and the name of the workbook shows at the top, but nothing opens. It stops while trying to open. The workbook is not hidden, the sheets are not protected. It is as if you have excel open with no workbooks open, but yet the name is at the top of the toolbar. This started Monday, and we restored from a tape, (Friday morning's tape) then it happened again today. Please any ideas will help. We are desperate to get this file back today as soon as possible. 2 instances of excel are not running. It is just the one file, all other files work on the pc, all other files in the drive work as well. Thanks!

Does it open OK if you do File / Open from within Excel? If so then go into Excel and do Tools / Options / General / Unceck 'Ignore Other Applications'

Double clicking from a window, or even opening excel first. neither work, same outcome, blank screen, with name of workbook at the top

Also, FYI, the files on our tape from this morning's back up and Friday mornings back up are both corrupted

A few things...

The file name appears in the title bar of excel, indicating it is open, but no cells appear - correct?

Is there a cell reference listed in the name box (upper left below toolbars)?

If you do a "print preview" do you see any data?

Thanks so much for everyone's help! That is correct, but no cell references. You can't choose anything from the File, Edit, View, etc, areas except for new sheet and things like that, as if there is no book open. No option for print preview either. I can open it in word, looks like crap , I can open a new workbook and 'link' to a sheet in the corrupt workbook, data shows up, again crappy, unformatted, hard to read, but accessible. that is why I keep thinking there must be a way to open this. This will be the 2nd day in a row a person here has had to recreate this information from scratch.

What version Excel? 2002 onwards have a detect and repair option. If the data is not too sensitive and you can mail me a copy of the workbook, then I would be happy to try and open it with both 2002 and 2003 and see if it lists it as being corrupted.

Only other thing I can think of, is perhaps the window has moved off screen. Have you tried doing Window / Arrange / Tiled or any of the other options.

I have Microsoft Excel Version 2000. I don't have the options to Arrange, etc. Thanks though! Let me talk to the network guy here who is also working on this via the microsoft website, without any luck. I will ask him if we have 2002 or 2003 versions of excel, and if not I will see if I can email the data.

OK, forget the Window / Arrange bit. Just reread your notes and saw that it is like not having a workbook open at all. One thing though, if you have opened it in Word then it is Toast anyway and you will be able to do nothing else with it, even if you didn't save it.

I'm still happy to try and repair it with both of the later versions of Excel, but don't bother if it is the copy that has been opened in Word.

OK, we do have Excel 2002 on one machine running XP. Is this just a simple option to repair?

I can just restore from our tape this morning and try to repair that one using excel 2002. thoughts on doing that? Also, why does opening it with word damage the file?

BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!! I am extremely happy. Worked great! The workbooks has links in it and I think the links had gotten corrupted. Do you think she should say yes to refresh links everytime, or if the data did not change does it even matter? I wonder if a user can do something to corrupt the links? Thanks for your help!

FYI, so everyone knows, in case someone needs this. It was actually an object, graphic that caused this. We will be removing the graphic and using another. Thanks for your help!

No idea why it should get corrupted, just one of those things I'm afraid. Repairing is a simple option and though you have probably already found it from your note, for anyone else reading, when you do File Open, the dialog box that comes up and lets you choose a file has an 'Open' button on it, that if you click on the arrow to the right of it will give you various repair options.
