Hi,

When trying to open an Excel file I get this warning:
"The file you are trying to open is in different format as specified by the extension. Do you want to open?" Yes/No/Help

I click yes and file opens without any problem.
Extension is .xls
What is the format for a Excel2007 or -2010 xls file?

Regards,

The extension for 2007/2010 is xlsx. If you rename xlsx file to xls you will receive message like that.

Hi RTag,

When I do that I will get an error message informing (translated)

"The file myFile.XLSX cannot be opened due to the format of the the fileextension is not valid. Check if the file is not currupted and if the extension is according to the format."

with an OK button and no way to open the file.

Hi Sftw

I will test and report back if all my tests are negative. May take an other day.

You'll also get that message if you've saved a .txt file as .xls by the way. Can you open the file in Notepad?

Cheers, Glenn.

Hi Glenn,
I am coming closer to the solution. The file is an XML file with following heading:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
<?mso-application progid="Excel.Sheet"?>
<Workbook xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:spreadsheet"
xmlns:eek:="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice"
xmlns:x="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:excel"
xmlns:ss="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:spreadsheet"
xmlns:html="
I am still under investigation, thanks

OK, that's progress. Note that xlsm is also a valid filetype in Excel 2007 and Excel 2010.

Cheers, Glenn.
