Excel TMP files

Most of the time when I edit an excel file, it creates a TMP file in the folder where the original file resides. If I edit a file ten times in a day, I get ten TMP files. I have tmp & temp folders on my system, yet the tmp files are put in the same folder as the original file. Why does this happen and what can I do to stop it?

1. The tmp files are to be expected.

2. The fact that they remain after you close them is not.
