hi....
Is it possible to protect a range of cells rather than the whole book or sheet.

Yes it is
Select the range you want to protect then go to format and protection, tick the protect box and then lock the worksheet (it won't have any effect unless you lock)
Ensure that the other cells i.e. not your range are unprotected though
