I am using a template .xls file to create a type of tabular report and filling in the cells with data from an application. This all works fine, so here's the problem, I save the file as another workbook obtained from a text box, this works ok but the data remains and is saved into the template xls even though I quit excel after the first save. What's going wrong do you think?

Do you have the Autosave add-in active? If so, I wonder if this is saving your template, with data, before you get a chance to quit without saving?

Make sure Excel is really closing by looking at the process list (Shift+Ctrl+Esc). If it's not closing, then do a search in this forum for how to make sure it is .. it's a common problem.

A template usually has a suffix of .xlt. I sugest you open you workbook and save as xxxx.xlt (making sure the type is 'template'), and change your code to open this file. You should find Excel will then open a workbook named Book1.xls based on your template.
Even if auto save is on it won't overwrite the template.

thanks for your help guys. The template xlt seemed to do the job
