Excel pathways issue

User navigates to a network place and doubleclicks an excel spreadsheet on a file server (I've tried mapped dirve too.). Excel starts to open and it says the document cannot be found.
User gets an excel spreadsheet as an attachment, double clicks, Excel begins to open and the path to the document cannot be found.
User OPENS excel, navigates to the appropriate document TROUGH THE BROWSING OF EXCEL and it opens fine.
mmmmhhhhh. Curious. Any ideas out there?
