In the process of making changes to a file over the last couple of days, now, each time I open this file, I get 2 copies of it opened -- when I click on Window in the menu, I see filename:1 and filename:2.

If I close either 1, they both close. They seem to be the same file, but it is confusing me.

Other files are not doing this, so it's not the program. Any ideas?

This "sounds" like 2 Windows of the SAME file - which should be "checked out" FIRST.

To get a 2nd (or 3rd) window, one uses the same "Window" on the menu, and chooses "New Window". In such a case, you would get "1 filename.xls: 1" and "2 filename.xls: 2" if you had saved your file under the name "filename".

However, if this was the scenario, and you chose "Close Window" (the lower "X" at the top-right of the screen), then only one of the Windows would close - not both.

It seems like you might well have checked this out thoroughly, but in case not, can you try closing out the one "Window". Perhaps, (just perhaps) you might have clicked the "top X" which would close out the file.

...Just "stabbing in the dark" ...and hoping to hit on something.

Thank you for your help. "New window" was the issue, I must have hit it accidentally. I'd never worked with that area, and I'm not even sure when you'd want to use it. Any thoughts on that?

mwolford, and JV,

First, JV, thanks for your "dead on" vote of confidence.

mwolford,

The second window can be useful, for example, when you want to copy data from one sheet to another sheet, or compare data, etc.

With the two windows, you would use <Control> <Tab> to "quickly" go from one Sheet to the next.

Also, with more than 1 file open, you can ALSO use <Control> <Tab> to "easily" go from one file to the other.

...MUCH quicker than using the mouse method.
