Excel Opening Problems

Alright this one has me stumped. User on a new Dell Optiplex, running XP Pro and Office 2k Pro, cannot open excel documents by double clicking on them. The user can open the file fine by using the open file once excel is open.

Office is patched with all the current patches available from MS.

I checked the double click speed to see if that was set ridicoulously high and it wasn't.

Any suggestions would be great.

Find any .xls file. Then, while holding the shift key right-click and select Open With. Pick the MS Excel program and check 'Always open with this program' (or something similar to that).

you know whats funny is that when you double click it the icon the excel program opens.... just not the spreadsheet... sorry forgot to mention that.
