I have a worksheet which records client details - each client has a unique reference number as the first column. I then have other worksheets which record (for example) client placements (date started, date ended and type). Each of these also has the unique client reference number as the first column.

I would like the second worksheet to offer a dropdown list of client reference numbers stored on the first worksheet rather than the user being able to enter any client reference number (or indeed any number at all).

Is this possible?

Hi Wavey
If I understand your requirement correctly you should consider using Data Validation from the Data menu

Give your original list a name and then in the validation dialog choose list and in the source box enter you named range name.

ie if you name you list List (original, eh?) then in the source box enter
=List

Thanks but how do I name my list? And what is a list? I have tried the inbuilt help and an Excel book but can't find "What is a list and how to create one" anywhere.

Ken,

Thanks for the link - most useful! I now know what a list is and how to create one!

I have also used the data vaildation so that my users can select from the entries on book 1.

I now want to ensure that they cannot enter data into the 2nd workbook cells other than choosing from my list. Can anybody help with this?

Thanks again,

Dave.

Just apply the data validation to all the cells that they might enter in...
