Excel Locked for Editing 1

We have a excel file that is stored on our server. When someone opens it for editing and closes it sometimes it won't allow anyone else to access the file for up to an hour later. We get the error message:

"Filename.xls is locked for editing"

by 'Administrator'

No one has the file open and we have even tried shutting down the computer of the last user of the file. Any ideas what would cause this and how to fix it?

We are using Excel 2002.

Is this a new install of office?

Is it always the same computer that is causing the file to be locked for editing?

It has been installed on our computers for a couple years or more, and it happens to several if not all the computers trying to open the file.

 

[onedtent]

look for temp file on the server. it will still be open.
