Our accounts department use a large number of Excel 2000 files on an XP platform which include hundreds of links to other Excel 2000 files. All files are located on the same shared resource on a Windows 2000 server and are linked via the mapped drive naming convention.
However, we've recently noticed the links have been changing to the url naming convention so Excel files are not updating. I believe the links are being automatically changed to a url that is found in 'My Network Places' because Windows XP prefers to use url's over the conventional mapped drive letters. However, the problem is that renamed links are incorrect because the link now includes the 'My Network Places' reference name within the link. Could anyone shed some light on whether this is the case. We don’t want to rename hundreds and hundreds of links if disabling the ‘My Network Places’ via GP’s or forcing Excel to use mapped links can resolve it. Does anyone have any ideas or experience with this problem?
