I have installed office 97 with Excel on a co-workers machine. it was working fine until we received an excel file created using Excel 2000 which we couldn't view all that well using Excel 97. So what we did is we installed Office 2000 to be able to view the file. THe problem is that every so often, when you try to open up excel, it freezes up the system and crashes Excel forcing us do a hard boot. Does anyone know why this happens and how to fix it. I have attempted to do a reinstall and a repair, but nothing seems to work. Can someone give me some guidance?

Thanks in advance

Are you getting any error messages? Do you have the Office SR1 (service pack) installed?

no we don't have sr1 installed and the only error messages we get is "Excel has caused an illegal operation" etc etc. then when I attempt to ctrl-alt-delete, i get: "system has run low on resources...would you like to close excel?"

I've attempted to install the service pack to no avail. the error log is tellin me that the file is not the right size.

what should I do?

If you are getting this error every time you try to start Excel then you could try the following:-

See if any of these help - Post is from Jan Karel Pieterse in the Excel newsgroups. Bloated xlb file is usually a favourite fix so try that first - See below for info.

Try opening Excel without any addins or hidden workbooks:

Start, Run,
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office\Excel.exe" /Automation

Quotes mandatory, Note you may have to change the path.

If your error disappears, there is either an add-in or a
(hidden) workbook that is loaded upon XL's start, which
bothers you.

- Try locating the XLSTART directory, move everything from
there.
- In XL: Tools, Addins, note the ones checked and uncheck
them one at the time, each time restarting XL
- In XL, Tools, options, general. Check if a path is
entered after "Alternate startup file location". Clear it.

Another option is to open XL in Safe mode:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" /Safe

Also, you might try:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office\Excel.exe" /Regserver

Yet another possible problem is a corruption of your
toolbar customisation file. Locate all files with
extension .xlb and rename the extension(s) to something
like .old
Now try and start XL again.

Also, NAV has shown to cause "Excel caused an invalid page
fault in module VBE6.DLL".
You might try disabling the Office plug in of NAV.

Finally, this is what MS has to say:

Hi,

I`ve been getting the same errors and I would like to try the suggestions from Ken, but first I don`t know how to find which version of Office 200 I have. I`m pretty sure I installed Office 2000 then applied Office SP2, but when I look at the version info for Excel and Word, they both say SR-1......

How can I confirm which version I have?

Thanks in advance for any info,
Danny

I had a similar problem that went from "Excel has caused a fatal error" to "Excel has caused an illegal operation" and then with alt ctl del got your message "system has run low on resources...would you like to close excel"

carrr pointed me to the Excel toobar configuration file which had somehow got corrupted. His advice which fixed the problem for me was to rename a file named Excel.XLB and is in c:\windows\application data\microsoft\ to Excel.old and then restart Excel. Voila all probs dissappeared. Give it a shot

thanks for all of the posts, but unfortunately the annoying sound of my co-worker didn't allow me to try any of those tips, so all I did was uninstall and reinstall excel by itself. (Listening patiently for annoying coworker........good) I will try these next time I get an issue like that.

Thanks again

I am having a simular problem with Excel 97 running Windows 98. When I try and open Excel it hangs, then when I bring up the task manager, the system is dangeously low on resources...then I have to do a hard boot. Word is fine...Access too. 256 M RAM

I reinstalled it and it stopped for a week. Maybe some windows system file is curupted? Help!

So have you tried the fixes suggested, in particular the *.xlb one?

Regards
Ken...........

Hi PhilF

I'm also experiencing quite a similar problem EXcel crashes and most of the times it starts looking for the instalation files (as it was installed over a network) I'm using office 2003 and instead of this path (c:\windows\application data\microsoft\)
I looked for Excel.xlb in
c:\documents and Settings\user\application Data\microsoft\
can u let me know where I can find it. by the way I'm using Win XP proffesional.
