Hello

I have around 5 Excel documents, which i do not seem to be able to save to a different location. If i go to save as and change the name of the document it tells me that Excel.exe has generated errors and needs to close, this is always happening i cant take the data out and move it into a new doc as i have too many sheets and will take ages. Anyone else has this issue as it is driving me nuts.

Cheers

What is worse? this task taking ages or not being able to use your spreadsheets properly ??

In reality, this would not take long to move all sheets to a new workbook. Simply select all sheets (using mouse and shift key). Right click on any of the sheet tabs and choose Move / Copy
Select new workbook and Bob is a very close approximation to your mother's brother !

Don't understand why you can't save to another location but it's certainly not the only way of getting the data there. Have you tried just copying the file there using Windows Explorer, becauase if you have an issue doing it that way then perhaps it's an access rights problem or something related.

If you can access the other drive though then Windows Explorer should do what you want in seconds.

Cheers guys i know but it's just a pain of having to do that it should be so simple all i want to do is rename the file but oh no thats to difficult for Microsoft. I can move the file to a fifferent location so it's not a permissions error and i am the owner of the doc, i just wanted to save changes and call it(new) but every time i do this it just crashes. Microsoft has no ideas, anymore info would be great cheers.

How long is the full pathname of the destination folder - Is it by any chance longer than 254 characters?

Is it just a specific drive that you have an issue with trying to save it to?

Is anyone else able to save that exact file to that exact destination witha different name?

Hi Ken

The filename is about 50 characters at most, the file in question is stored on a local PC and even if i log on as administrator i still get the same issue. I cant save these files anywhere on the pc the only thing i can think of is that the docs were created using office 97 and we are now using xp. Would this be a problem.

Is it just these 5 specific files or all Excel files?

If just the 5 then have you tried an 'Open and repair' option on those files. Do File / Open and then on the 'Open' dialog box on the 'Open' button you will see a dropdown arrow where you can choose this option.

If that doesn't help then have you tried a repair install of Office - Just pop the disc in and choose the repair option from the options you will be given.

I have a couple of excel documents that will not save. This is the error "This function is not working properly, please repair and try again. When I repair it doesn't fix the error. I have also removed Office completely (the registry, root directory, add and remove programs) and still the same error message.
