Excel font change delay

We have a laptop. When it is connected to a network, any change font change takes about 10 seconds the first time. Any subsequent font changes in the worksheet are instantaneous. If the laptop has no network connections, we do not experience the delay. Any idea what could be causing this?

I forgot to mention, this is Excel 2003.
