I've got a user on our network who just got a new machine with XP Pro. She has beaucoup files stored on the primary file server. When she opens one of her files she is informed that it is being edited by user x, where x is the last user to have it open (x may equal anyone, even her). She then closes the file without saving it and reopens it. The second time it opens normally and can be edited. She can then attempt to reopen again, but this time she gets the locked file message, again. Another close and open cycle and the file is once again editable.

A few more facts - the file server is an old NT Server. No other users on the server are having this problem. I cannot reproduce the problem from my machine. She can reproduce it 100% of the time on the files to which it happens, but it doesn't happen to all files. Some of the files it happens on are very old, some more recent. None created since she got her new machine. It never happens on files on her C drive, but she has very few of those and we can't really get a good test. She has Full Control based on her user name for all directories in the heirarchy, inheritance is in effect.

Office XP, the machine was just built a couple of weeks ago with all Windows updates as of that time.

How about Office XP Service Packs? Also check out this KB article.

No idea if it is even related but there have recently been issues with people seeing Excel files still open in the VBE even after they have been closed. This was narrowed down to having the Google Desktop Explorer installed - Might be worth a look to see if she has that installed and could possibly be causing this.
