My computer has Excel 2000 running with windows NT.

I am having a continuing problems with an error message that pops up.

The box says Program Error in the title.
The message is: EXCEL.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program.

An error log is being generated.

and of course, the "OK" box.

Excel has been uninstalled, then a full reinstall done.
I tried going back to the original keyboard and mouse, thinking that the wireless keyboard and mouse I had installed might have somehow caused errors. the machine is a DEll Optiplex GX280. I first thought it might have been one particular spreadsheet that was causing the problem, but now I don't think so. I get the error at random times, so it is hard to point fingers at one thing.

Any ideas would be helpful. And if I posted this in the wrong place, I am sorry. Please point me in the right direction.

It sounds like a corrupt file.

If you open excel by itself (don't try to open a a .xls file), do you still get the error?

I finally figured out what was happening. There was an excel.xlb worksheet in XLStart folder, I think from a spreadsheet from long long ago. I took a deep breath, hit delete and so far, problem solved.

Thanks for the help.

.xlb and personal.xls were going to be my next suggestions.

Glad you got it sorted!

BTW: the excel.xlb is where your personal toolbar pref's are stored.
