Excel error "document not saved" 1

User opens Excel spreadsheets from a network drive, alters data and tries to save the workbook. When he does this (using either Save or Save As) he gets a message box titled Microsoft Excel with the Message "Document Not Saved". This is with Office XP on a Windows XP machine. The file is not that large (400k) and he can open and save some other documents to the network drive with no problem. Any ideas?

sounds like either a corrupted workbook or a temporary disconnection from the network

if the former then copy all data to a new blank workbook (data only - not structure)

if the latter, it shouldn't happen every time - however, if it happens once, it can corrupt the workbook meaning you will need to copy data anyway

We had that going on in our office for several months, it was very random but usaly the same group of machines. It turned out to be a bad network switch, replaced it and havent had the problem since.

Thanks for the suggestions, but neither of them took. Still gets the same error. Also tried having him save locally with a short filename (the existing one was pretty long), but to no avail, eliminating the possibility of a network issue.

Maybe a lack of memory issue, as the workbook has linked data? Even tried giving user temporary admin rights to his machine... also didnt work. Any other fixes/workarounds???

actually, saving locally does not preclude the possiblility of network issue - if the connection is lost, excel "forgets" a lot of information about the file and it then cannot be saved ANYWHERE - not even on the local drive.

I don't know why people are so resistant to this - please see the following threads which discuss the same error message (a quick search on "Document Not Saved" would've thrown these up btw)

I was resistant to it because it seemed as though, even if it was a network connection issue, that it wouldn't effect the file in that way... but you were right. Copied the sheets from the old workbook to a new one and all is well. Star for you.

it is not a netwrok connection issue as such - it is EXCEL losing its memory of where the file was saved etc....as you can see from the threads, you're not the 1st person to be sceptical about this. Anyways - seems to be sorted your end so "Happy days" !!

I am having the same problem and I have read the different threads about this and want to see if I can't troubleshoot my switches as people have said might be a problem because of temporary disconnections. I have a home office with 12 computers set up all working off a 5 Mbs Cable internet connection. The cable internet is then wired to my router which had 2 8 port gigabit switches attached to which our computers are connected.

We use AOL Instant Messanger and we are losing our connection to that all day long, but I don't know enough about how to troubleshoot this problem since i have a lot of variables (2 switches, 1 router, a cable modem and 12 computers). Any suggestions would be invaluable.
