Excel doc has lost macros

For some reason, I have a user that has lost her macros in one of her documents. They are no longer listed. Anyone have any idea how to retrieve them or what may have happened to them?
 
If she stored her macros in the 'personal.xls' worksheet and then used that sheet as something else, then she would have to go to that worksheet to retrieve them. (It's happened to me.)

Or she could've saved the macro in the workbook only and it stays with that one workbook.

 
What exactly is the personal.xls? Is it like a template doc? I am not to familiar with excel. I think it was specific to this workbook, though.
