Hi,

I made a form in Excel, then protected the sheet.
I have some figures in one of the columns that I would like to tally up, but cannot do so.
I have made sure that before I protected the sheet, that the particular cell I want to be able to tally a total in is not locked.
And when I protected the sheet, only the contents is protected.

Is there a way to fix this so I can tally whatever I want in my sheets after I protect them?

Thanks,
Maisie

Hi,

What version of Excel?

Please explain how you have totaled.

Do you have to change anything on the protected sheet to get a new total?

Maisie,

I had management remove the STAR that you awarded me, for no other reason than I replied with a question.

Awarding STARS ought to be done when someone has done a good job of providing information that you could not have gotten by just doing some searches in Tek-Tips. It is not just a "Thank you", which can and should be expressed to someone who has taken time to reply to you post, but it relates to a VALUABLE post; one that YOU valued and one that could be of value to other Tek-Tip members as well.

Oh, I figured pressing the star indicates appreciation for answering a post! Well, in that case, thank you for answering....:)! But how do people who answer get notified there's activity to their post?

Anyways....I have to remove the sheet protection in order to sum a row up.

The way I am summing that is not working is the standard way, by clicking one cell in the row, and holding shift down and then clicking an empty cell after the last figure, then hitting the sum button. When the sheet is protected, the sum button is greyed out.

So you're trying to EDIT the range refernce in the SUM formula, true?

I can't remember if '97 allows that. I can do it in 2003.

Maisie,

In regards to your question of how do you get notified that there is activity in your post, you can select to get an email notification whenever that particular thread recieves a post. you can select it right below where you type in the response.

Don't think xl97 has this option

You will either have to manually unprotect, add formula then protect again or use some VBA code to do it for you...

We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names and all are different colours but they all live in the same box.
